Private Pilot Course Overview

Course purpose

• Prepare students to obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Private Pilot Certificate (Airplane, Single-Engine Land).

Flight Training

Instrument Rating Overview

What it is

Knowledge test and practical exam

• Knowledge test: FAA Instrument Airplane Knowledge Test (multiple-choice) covering all IFR topics. Passing score required before practical test.

• Practical test (checkride): Oral exam and flight test with an FAA-designated examiner covering IFR procedures, decision-making, and demonstrated instrument flying proficiency, including approaches, holds, and emergency procedures.

Currency and proficiency

• To carry passengers under IFR or in IMC, a pilot must satisfy recent experience requirements: within the previous 6 calendar months, at least six instrument approaches, holding procedures, and intercepting/tracking courses using navigation systems. If not current, a safety pilot or instrument instructor must provide reestablishment of currency.
